Thanks Josh! Just what the doctor ordered - don't even need a LayeredPane it seems!

Can I ask one more related question? When I am in the Netbeans form designer, the JXMapViewer bean displays the map just fine - i.e. it manages to get the data from the Tile servers. But when I run the app as a standalone, it can't get through because of our firewall. How do I tell JXMapViewer to use the proxy? I guess this is a general Java question, but I'm in the dark, nonetheless :-)

thnx again,
tom
