Thanks...it is currently my (paid) job to figure all this stuff out, so I figured I would share the document with the community if it is helpful (with my employer's blessing)

To set custom renderers, in your custom ColumnFactory's configureTableColumn(TableModel, TableColumnExt) method, call tableColumnExt.setCellRenderer(newRenderer) on the column to define which renderer for it to use. There is an article in the wikis on SwingX renderers you should take a look there, I haven't had time to write that up yet.
